More on Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Marco Solorio from One River Media shot some fantastic test footage of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and compared it to 5DmkIII footage. Marco does a really good job of showing exactly whats great and not great about both cameras.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera DNG Samples

Blackmagic Design recently uploaded five DNG sequence shots from their new Blackmagic Cinema Camera.  The clips were shot by John Brawley and are full rez (2432×1366) RAW 12bit.  I’ve only played with them a bit in Da Vinci Resolve and After Effects but I’m pretty impressed by the image quality and the latitude is very impressive.  I recommend at least opening them in photoshop to see the full range of exposure the RAW files supply.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera has its limitations (tiny sensor size and internal battery) but for a $3,000 price tag it’s a pretty impressive camera.

UFVA Stereoscopy Presentation: Europa

Last August I had the pleasure to present with my colleagues Bruce Hutchinson and Scott Meador at the University Film and Video Association on our experiences in low-budget stereoscopy which culminated in the short film Europa.  To date, Europa has screened at the Little Rock Film Festival and at the 2012 UFVA Conference.  While the project was an incredibly large undertaking for a group of working professionals, we found the process very rewarding.

Many in my field (academia not hollywood) dismiss stereo3D as a passing fad and excessively limiting to the moviemaking and viewing experience.  My experience has been much more positive.  I believe stereo3D has a very important role to play in the evolution of the motion picture and technology has reached a point that 3D can truly add something to the overall narrative experience.

The most important thing I took away from this project is that creating Stereo3D images is much more possible than you might imagine.  Every piece of equipment and software we used we either built ourselves or was off the shelf.  The process was challenging but far from impossible and the result is of high quality.

Strategic Planning Presentation UFVA 2012

This August my colleagues at the University of Central Arkansas and I attended the University Film and Video Association and took part in a panel on strategic planning.

Strategic planning is an extremely effective tool for effectively determining and communicating goals, action plans, and assessment strategies.  Strategic planning is common place in large institutions and companies but I believe it can be a very effective tool for smaller operations as well.

Here’s a copy of our presentation:

On a semi related note, if you use powerpoint I recommend checking out Slideshare. It’s a great tool for sharing power point presentations with the world.
